Levelling up in your Career
Written by Sarah Manyok
We often get distracted with our own lives and tend to let our skill development slack off when so consumed by our careers.
Our workplaces are constantly changing and evolving over time, so why can’t we?
Learn to treat every workday as if it’s a new day to learn.
No matter your chosen profession or industry, my list of top 5 tangible tips on levelling up in your career can be used by anybody looking to adopt a growth mentality.
1) The do less but do more mindset
Now you’re probably thinking girl you don’t make sense, So let me explain!
Do less in terms of mindless activities and to-do-lists, however ALWAYS do more than your competition.
When it comes to doing less set small, attainable goals rather than creating long to-do-lists that’ll just leave you feeling overwhelmed and unaccomplished.
Just understand getting to the next level of your career isn’t going to occur overnight.
Now when we talk about doing more than your competition, whether you’re competing with a co-worker or yourself, it’s crucial to be better than you were the day before.
Strategise a plan, work effectively and execute that plan in order to level up in your career.
2) Tunnel Vision Focus
We often spend so much time perfecting our goals, making them as specific and realistic as possible.
But why do you want it? — When planning long term goals It’s important to ask yourself questions and understand why you want to achieve the things you want to achieve.
You need to get insanely specific on the end goal, this can be achieved by creating a time frame and splitting your goals into a yearly, monthly, weekly and daily category.
3) Networking
Relationship building is highly important — having communication and interpersonal skills can really uplift your career.
But we already knew that!!!
One of the easiest ways to expand your network is to build on the relationships with people you currently know.
Become a good conversationalist, be diligent with your work ethic. This makes you noticeable and an avenue for newer opportunities.
4) Stretch your Role
This is probably the most important tip I could possibly give you.
Don’t get stuck in your comfort zone — Challenge yourself!
You should start taking on new responsibilities to further gain the experience you need in order to level up.
Showing this kind of initiative will make you much more valuable and will take you a long way.
5) Have a Healthy Work-Life balance
Lastly, trying to achieve a healthy balance between work-life and social life can be a bit of a challenge for some of us.
A good work-life balance means you have control between different aspects of your life, where benefits gained from one aspect can support and strengthen another aspect of your life.
It’s important to work hard however don’t wear yourself too thin.
