Essential tips for first-year Uni students
Written by Rabica Manyok
Being a First Year student at University can be quite an overwhelming but yet exciting experience.
It is important to be able to remain organised and on top of things in all of your subjects.
This week I have decided to conduct a list of 5 tips that’ll assist in conquering your first year at university, that could potentially help you in achieving your academic endeavours.
1) Keep Organised
Make a habit out of being organised- prepare for classes by reading the assigned course material. Writing your notes out in an organised manner and reviewing your notes before each class is important for understanding the course content and current topic you’re looking at in your class.
2) Know your interests
Pick a major/ Key units that interest you- remember that it’s okay to have an undecided major, take your time when choosing. It is also a good idea to expand your interests and knowledge by taking units that you haven’t taken before, this could potentially help you to figure out what you would like to pursue as a career in the future if you are currently unsure.
3) Create a study plan
planning out your week or even your day will create more efficiency for you.
Conducting a checklist can also certainly improve your performance as a student and will allow you to achieve consistent results. The feeling of ticking tasks off your checklist off as you go creates a major feeling of accomplishment.
4) Manage your stress
Make sure to make time for yourself and do things that make you feel good. It could be exercising, going for a walk, listening to music or a podcast. Practising relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga. Anything that gives you a good break from your studies and allows you to recharge.
5) Ask for feedback
Always ask for feedback or help when you need it- It can almost always be beneficial to ask for personal feedback from your tutor or lecturer. Feedback can improve your self-awareness and can allow you to be more enthusiastic and engaged in learning.
It also helps to enhance learning and improve assessment performance. You can also check your universities website for extra academic assistance and workshops. You may also be able to find students who have studied your course that could help you in achieving your academic goals.
