Girl Guide to Government
Written by Philasande Dladla
1) Preparation
Make sure your skills align with the government’s vision
Too often we jump into roles we are not fully prepared for technically. Make sure that the course you are taking is a skill set needed by the government, luckily the government has many sectors ranging from arts, and social services to technology and agriculture. In every sector, there is a division that is tailored to different skills and needs. Once you get into your desired role, make sure to learn everything but do not conform. The best asset you have is yourself, bring freshness into governance. Be more effective in your role and in bringing your fresh perspective and necessary change to government.
2) Show up and show off
Start getting involved in career expos and internship opportunities that lead to government. Volunteer at your nearest council, register and be part of your preferred political party. This gives a good track record for your future government job. It shows that you are interested in bringing change to your community no matter the role you are in. This also benefits you as you will learn about how campaigns run, different government and political terminologies and an insight into how Australian politics is run from a local, state and federal perspective.
3) Stay grounded
Values, Values, Values! The government can drain you and you may lose your sense of ethos. By staying grounded in your morals, values and ethos. Always remember to put people before you in a sense of community. Lead by example and express the opinions of the community you are representing at all times.
4) Build your resume
This links to “Show up and show off” not by just doing government-related work but by expanding it. Do something in your community, create a political podcast and stay consistent, run a social movement campaign online or physically, join a club, get involved incorporate.
5) Be confident
Before, during and after
Be confident in everything you do. Align with your future brand in the present. Dress up according to how you want others to address you, walk your talk and keep your head up.
“its time for girls and women to take their rightful places in society.”
